Prompt 16: The Anatomy Scan Prep Sheet
When to use it
Your 20-week anatomy scan is coming up. You want to walk in knowing what they're looking for, what questions to ask, and what to do if something unexpected shows up.
The Prompt
My anatomy scan is on [DATE] at ~[N] weeks. I want to walk in prepared.
My context:
- Previous pregnancies: [E.G., "none" / "one prior, healthy" / "one prior with [condition]"]
- Family history of birth differences: [E.G., "cousin had spina bifida" / "none known"]
- My age: [AGE]
- This pregnancy so far: [E.G., "low-risk, all normal screening so far" / "high-risk due to [X]"]
- Partner's role at the scan: [E.G., "will be there" / "can't make it, will join by phone" / "alone"]
Please give me:
1. What they're actually measuring (the ~25 things on the standard anatomy scan)
2. The 5 questions I should ask during the scan
3. What "soft markers" mean (and which are usually nothing to worry about)
4. What unexpected findings are common at this scan and what to do if I get one
5. Whether to find out the sex (and how to ask if I change my mind during the scan)
6. How long the scan takes (and why)
7. What to bring (water, snacks, comfort items)
8. The follow-up plan if something needs more investigation
Important: I want to be informed without being terrified.Example output
*"They measure: brain ventricles, face/lips, spine, heart (4 chambers + outflow tracts), diaphragm, kidneys, bladder, stomach, long bones, hands, feet. Soft markers (echogenic focus, mild pyelectasis, single umbilical artery) are usually nothing — 90%+ resolve. If they see one, ask: 'How does this change my risk?' and 'What follow-up do you recommend?' Questions to ask: 'Is everything measuring on track?' 'Are there any soft markers?' 'Is the placenta in a normal position?' (anterior/low-lying placenta is common but usually resolves by 28 weeks). Bring: water, snack, your phone charged. The scan takes 30-60 min — be patient if baby isn't cooperating."*
