Prompt 44: The "Hospital Stay" Power Map
When to use it
You're in the hospital, things are happening to you and the baby, and you want to know what to ask, when to push back, and how to make the most of the 24-48 hour stay.
The Prompt
I'm in the hospital postpartum. I want to know what to expect, what to ask for, and how to advocate without being 'that patient.'
My situation:
- Time since birth: [E.G., "6 hours" / "24 hours" / "36 hours — about to be discharged"]
- Type of stay: [E.G., "vaginal, 24-48 hr discharge" / "C-section, 3-4 day stay"]
- What's been offered: [E.G., "circumcision" / "first vaccines" / "hearing test" / "newborn photos" / "formula samples"]
- What I'm unsure about: [E.G., "everything" / "pain management" / "when to ask for help" / "the discharge process"]
- What I want to decline: [E.G., "I don't want visitors" / "I don't want certain vaccines" / "I want to leave early" / "I don't want formula samples"]
- Support: [E.G., "partner here" / "I'm alone" / "family coming later"]
Please give me:
1. The hospital schedule for a typical [vaginal/C-section] stay (so I know what's coming)
2. The 7 things to ask for that I might not know to ask for (lactation consultant, pain meds, food, etc.)
3. The 3 things to decline (if I want to) and the script for each
4. How to ask for a 'do not disturb' sign (and what it gets you)
5. The discharge checklist (what needs to happen before you leave)
6. How to know if you're being discharged too early (and the 'I want to stay' option)
7. The 'I'm leaving AMA' (against medical advice) path — when, how, what
8. The single most important question to ask each shift change
Important: Help me be a respected patient, not a passive one.Example output
*"Typical vaginal stay: 24-48 hrs. C-section: 3-4 days. Schedule: every 2-3 hrs feeding checks, 1-2 pediatrician visits, lactation if requested, hearing screen, possibly circumcision. 7 to ask for: (1) lactation consultant visit, (2) peri bottle + pads (take extras home), (3) max pain meds (don't be shy), (4) help with first shower if you want it, (5) food at every meal, (6) 'do not disturb' sign for rest, (7) newborn care demo before discharge (especially first-time). Decline: visitors (your right), formula samples (your right), newborn photos (free but optional), vaccines you want to delay. Discharge checklist: car seat, baby has peed + pooped, bleeding control OK, BP OK, follow-up appointments scheduled. AMA: legal right, sign form, know the risks. Ask each shift: 'What's the plan for tonight?'"*
